A dinner jacket is the one garment where fit is everything: clean shoulders, a close waist, a lapel that lies flat. Rashmi has made black tie for more than 45,000 clients since 1987, and every custom tuxedo starts with your own pattern, drafted from your measurements in our Hong Kong workroom and kept on file.

The cuts we make: shawl, peak, single and double breasted
Every dinner jacket we make is bespoke and half-canvassed, so the chest sits cleanly under evening light and through a long night.
- Single-breasted tuxedo: one button, the classic black tie line. Works with any lapel.
- Double-breasted tuxedo: a commanding, formal shape that keeps the front neat all night.
- Shawl lapel tuxedo: a smooth, rounded lapel with no notch — soft, elegant and very traditional.
- Peak lapel tuxedo: sharp, upward-pointing lapels that broaden the shoulder and suit taller or slimmer frames.
- Dinner jacket on its own: worn with black evening trousers — ideal in velvet, ivory or a colour.
- Tuxedo suit / dinner suit: jacket and matching trousers, cut together from your pattern.
Facings, buttons, pockets, vents and trouser details are chosen at your fitting.
Cloth and colours: velvet, jacquard and wool
We cut dinner jackets in velvet, jacquard and wool cloths. Colours we stock include midnight blue, black, ivory/white, maroon, light blue, brown, orange, purple, red and green. A velvet dinner jacket is warm, rich and right for winter evenings; a jacquard dinner jacket carries a woven pattern for a bolder look; wool is the timeless choice for a full dinner suit.
Availability of each colour in each cloth changes, so Vijay will show you exactly what is in stock at your fitting.
White and ivory dinner jackets, and midnight blue
A white dinner jacket or ivory dinner jacket is the traditional warm-weather and summer evening choice — worn with black trousers and a black bow tie for weddings, resorts and outdoor black tie. Ivory is softer against most complexions than bright white.
A midnight blue tuxedo is many clients' favourite. Under artificial light midnight blue can look deeper and richer than black, and it photographs beautifully. Black remains the classic for the most formal events.
Inspired by the classic screen spy look
Many clients come to us asking for a look inspired by the sharp midnight blue dinner jacket and black tie style made famous on screen — the kind of suit people search for as a "James Bond suit", "James Bond tuxedo", "Daniel Craig tuxedo" or "007 suit". What they are really asking for is a set of tailoring details: a close, clean fit through the chest and waist, a trim shoulder, a shawl or peak lapel, a slim trouser with no break, a crisp dress shirt and a hand-tied bow tie. Sometimes it is an ivory dinner jacket for a warm evening.
We don't copy costumes and we have no connection to any film or studio — we simply cut your own dinner jacket, to your own pattern, in that spirit. Bring a description of the look you like and Vijay will translate it into cloth, cut and details that suit you.
Black tie vs dinner suit vs cocktail attire
- Black tie: a dinner jacket or tuxedo (black or midnight blue; ivory/white in warm weather), dress shirt, black bow tie, black evening shoes.
- Dinner suit: the British term for a tuxedo — the same thing. "Dinner jacket" is the jacket; "tuxedo" is the American word.
- Black tie optional: a tuxedo is welcome; a dark suit and tie is acceptable.
- Cocktail attire: a well-cut dark suit, or a velvet or coloured dinner jacket with dark trousers if you want to stand out.
When in doubt, ask Vijay — he'll match the jacket to the invitation.
How fittings work: trunk shows, Hong Kong and reorders
Vijay does every US fitting himself, one to one, at our Trunk Shows in cities across the US. Allow 30–60 minutes. If you are travelling through Asia, visit us in Hong Kong and be fitted at our workroom.
Your pattern is drafted in Hong Kong and kept on file, so a second dinner jacket, a velvet jacket for winter or a new dress shirt can be reordered remotely. International clients are welcome — we ship worldwide, and US shipping is free.
Black tie weddings and the rest of the wardrobe
For a black tie wedding, the groom, fathers and groomsmen can each be fitted for a custom tuxedo — see Wedding Suits for Men. For suits, sport coats, shirts and coats, see Bespoke Suits.

FAQ
What is the difference between a dinner jacket and a tuxedo?
Nothing in style — "dinner jacket" and "dinner suit" are the British terms, "tuxedo" is American. Some people use "dinner jacket" for the jacket alone, often in velvet or ivory.
Shawl lapel or peak lapel?
A shawl lapel is softer and more traditional; a peak lapel is sharper and broadens the shoulder. Vijay will suggest what suits your build.
Do you make double breasted tuxedos and velvet dinner jackets?
Yes. We make single- and double-breasted tuxedos and dinner jackets in velvet, jacquard and wool. Colours we stock include midnight blue, black, ivory/white, maroon and green, among others.
Can you make a tuxedo like the one in the spy films?
We can cut a dinner jacket inspired by that classic screen look — the clean midnight blue or ivory dinner jacket people call a "James Bond tuxedo" or "Daniel Craig suit". It is your own design, cut to your pattern; we have no affiliation with any film.
Is there a custom tuxedo near me?
Vijay holds fittings in cities across the US — see Trunk Shows — and you can also visit us in Hong Kong. Once your pattern is on file you can reorder from anywhere.
Do you ship to the UK and Australia?
Yes, we ship worldwide. Shipping to the US is free.
Is it really bespoke?
Yes. Every client gets an individual pattern, cut from their own measurements and kept on file. Our jackets are half-canvassed.
