Buy off the rack if you need something today and your body matches standard sizes well. Choose custom if fit matters to you, if you are between sizes, or if you wear suits often. What alterations can and cannot fix

Many people plan to buy a ready-made suit and "just get it altered". That works for some problems but not others. As a general rule:

Usually fixable:

  • Trouser length and hems
  • Taking in or letting out the trouser waist a little
  • Sleeve length, within limits
  • Taking in the jacket waist slightly

Difficult or impossible to fix properly:

  • Shoulders that are too wide, too narrow or sloped differently from yours
  • Jacket length
  • A collar that stands away from your neck
  • A chest that pulls across the buttons or is far too roomy
  • A jacket and trousers that come in fixed sizes that do not match your build

If the shoulders do not fit, the jacket will never look quite right, however much is spent on alterations. It is one of the most common reasons people switch to custom.

Who off-the-rack suits best

  • People whose measurements are close to standard sizes
  • Anyone who needs an outfit today, not tomorrow
  • One-off or fashion pieces you do not expect to wear for long
  • Casual clothes where a precise fit matters less

Who custom suits best

  • Athletic builds with broad shoulders or chests and slimmer waists
  • Taller, shorter or longer-armed people who struggle with standard proportions
  • Anyone who wears a suit several times a week
  • Grooms and wedding parties who want everything to look coordinated
  • Women who find ready-made suits fit in one place but not another

Working out the real cost

Price tags only tell part of the story. When comparing, add up:

  • The price of the ready-made suit
  • The cost of any alterations, and the time to get them done
  • How often you will actually wear it, and for how long

A suit that fits well tends to get worn more, because you reach for it first. Divide the price by the number of times you will wear it, and a custom suit starting from HK$3,500 often compares better than you might think. The same logic applies to shirts: a custom shirt from HK$580 that fits your neck and arms properly will get far more use than one that pulls at the collar.

Do you have to choose one or the other?

Not at all. Many people mix both: ready-made for casual weekend clothes, custom for work suits, shirts and important occasions. Custom shirts are often a good first step, since collar and sleeve fit are where off-the-rack shirts most often fall short.

The speed of Hong Kong tailoring makes custom practical even on a short visit. With men's suits usually ready in 24 to 48 hours, you can order early in your trip and collect before you fly. Women's suits need at least 3 days, so come in as soon as you arrive.
