The Art of Custom Tailoring: What to Expect from Rashmi Custom Tailors
If you have never had a suit made before, the process can feel a little mysterious. What happens at the first appointment? How long does it take? What does it cost? This guide walks you through a typical order at Rashmi Custom Tailors, from your first message to collecting your finished clothes, so you know exactly what to expect.
Who we are
Rashmi Custom Tailors has been making clothes in Hong Kong since 1987. Our shop is at 12/F, Block A, Suite A3, Burlington Arcade, 90–94 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, about 2 minutes' walk from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Exit B1. It is easy to reach, but also easy to walk past, so remember to look up. We are open Monday to Saturday 9am to 8pm, and Sundays and public holidays 10am to 6pm. Visits are by appointment only (no walk-ins), and Larry, the proprietor, handles Hong Kong fittings himself.
Since 1987 we have made clothes for over 45,000 clients, including around 5,000 grooms. We make suits, shirts, stretch polos, tuxedos, smoking jackets and trousers (dress, casual and stretch athletic) for men, and suits for women.
Prices at a glance
- Suits from HK$3,500
- Shirts from HK$580
These are starting prices for orders made at our Hong Kong shop. Pricing for women's suits is confirmed at your consultation. The final figure depends on what you order and the cloth you choose, so if a particular fabric catches your eye, ask for the price before you commit. There are no surprises that way.
Step 1: Get in touch
We work by appointment only, so the simplest way to start is a WhatsApp message to +852 9745 7058 or an email to [email protected]. Tell us what you are thinking of (a business suit, a few shirts, a wedding suit), and if you are visiting, the dates you arrive in and leave Hong Kong. That lets us suggest a sensible appointment time.
If you are not in Hong Kong yet, you can book a video consultation to talk through what you want before you travel. It is a good way to get your questions answered and arrive with a plan.
Step 2: Choose your fabric
We have about 2,000 fabrics to choose from, which sounds overwhelming until you narrow it down. The questions that matter most are what the suit is for, how often you will wear it and where. Hong Kong's heat and humidity make lighter, breathable cloths the sensible choice for most of the year, while a trip to a colder city calls for something heavier.
If you want to do some reading first, our guides to choosing suit fabric and the best fabrics for Hong Kong's climate cover the basics.
Step 3: Measurements and style details
Next, Larry takes your measurements and talks through the details that make the garment yours. For a suit, that usually means:
- Lapel style and width
- Single- or double-breasted, and the number of buttons
- Vents, pockets and buttons
- Lining colour
- Trouser style and how you like them to sit
A good fitting looks at more than numbers. Posture, the slope of your shoulders and how you stand all affect how a jacket hangs, which is why an in-person fitting is so valuable. If you are unsure about any detail, just ask. Guiding first-timers is part of the job.
Step 4: Fitting and collection
This is where Hong Kong tailoring surprises most people. Men's suits are usually ready in 24 to 48 hours. Women's suits take at least 3 days. Larry will confirm your fitting and collection times when you place your order, so you can plan the rest of your trip around them.
If you would like to hear from people who have been through the process, the Google reviews on our homepage are a good place to start.
What to bring to your appointment
- The shoes you plan to wear with the suit, as they affect trouser length
- A shirt similar to what you would wear under the jacket
- Photos of styles, colours or details you like
- A shirt or jacket that already fits you well, if you have a favourite
- Your travel dates, and the date of any event you are dressing for
Visiting Hong Kong on a short trip?
If you only have a few days in the city, a little planning makes all the difference:
- Message us before you fly so we can pencil in a time
- Come in on your first or second day rather than your last
- Allow 24 to 48 hours for men's suits and at least 3 days for women's suits
- Leave yourself some breathing room before your flight home
Cannot make it to Hong Kong at all? We hold trunk shows in cities abroad, and our Trunk Shows page lists upcoming dates and cities. At our US trunk shows, fittings are with Vijay, suits start from USD 695 and shirts from USD 105, and shipping to the US is free.
